Agratala, Tripura, May 16 (HBTV): Following the escape of a murder convict from the Central Correctional Home in Bishalgarh of Sepahijala district of Tripura, two prison staff members have been arrested by the police allegedly for helping the convict escape.
Prison warden Mahammad Mofiz Miah and sentry Tapan Rupini have been detained after a first information report (FIR) was lodged against them for their unauthorized presence during the convict’s escape and their alleged involvement in opening the prisoner's lockup.
The convict has been identified as one Swarna Kumar Tripura. He was sentenced under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including murder. According to the FIR and CCTV footage he managed to escape with the alleged assistance of the two staff members.
Jail superintendent Rakesh Chakraborty filed the FIR, highlighting the breach in security and the suspicious actions of the accused staff members.
Swarna Kumar Tripura, who was convicted in 2024, was found missing during a routine check. His absence prompted an investigation into the circumstances of his escape.
Further, Tripura was previously associated with the militant group National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT). However, senior police officials deny any current affiliation.
They clarified that after the murder case Tripura fled to Bangladesh and briefly encountered NLFT members but did not engage in armed conflict.
